Carcassonne is an ideal starting point to discover the department of the Aude which boasts one of the most beautiful fortress in Europe, “la Cité de Carcassonne”, and the “Canal du Midi” which runs through the centre of the city; Both of these are UNESCO World Heritage sites. (See links).
